As mentioned, Leith Academy ranks among Scotland’s oldest schools. It was founded around 1560, although some records refer to a ‘Grammar School’ dating back to 1521. Later, the name Leith Grammar was officially adopted by the institution.

Renaming and Another Change of Location
The year 1888 saw the school receive its new name: Leith Academy.
Then, in 1896, the school building on the west side of Leith Links was demolished. New educational premises, designed to accommodate a larger number of students, began to be built on the same site, with construction finishing in 1898. George Craig was responsible for the design.
Expansion and the Construction of the Modern Leith Academy Building
However, an ever-increasing number of potential pupils led to further changes.
The building erected in 1898 was transformed into Leith Primary School, and Leith Academy relocated to a different site on Duke Street. Of course, a dedicated structure had been built there in 1931 beforehand.
But interestingly, even this move wasn’t the final one for the institution. In 1991, a new Leith Academy building was opened near Easter Road.
