Early Years
James was born in Edinburgh. At just eleven years old, he began an apprenticeship with James MacIntosh, one of Edinburgh’s renowned booksellers.
His duties included collecting orders from various publishers active in Edinburgh at the time. This valuable experience allowed James to forge connections with the leading figures in Scottish publishing, notably A&C Black, W.R. Chambers, and Thomas Nelson.
Thin’s apprenticeship concluded in 1841, after which James MacIntosh officially offered him a permanent position.
His Own Venture
In 1848, at the age of twenty-four, James seriously considered establishing his own business. He decided to start by acquiring the assets of a bookseller named Mr. Rickard, who was facing financial difficulties at the time.
James immediately decided to name the shop after himself, though the business was only officially registered as “James Thin Ltd” in the 1970s.
Initially, trade wasn’t particularly brisk or successful. However, things gradually began to improve. The shop’s location played a part in this, being conveniently close to the University of Edinburgh.
Expansion
As business steadily improved, Thin decided to expand slightly in 1853, leasing new premises for his growing enterprise. Two years later, James further expanded his network of outlets by opening another shop. Interestingly, its back wall featured a hidden passage that led directly to James’s first store.
Evidently, trade was flourishing. Soon, Thin was officially promoting his business as “Edinburgh’s largest retail bookselling establishment.”
Bringing in the Family
The “book” business was an area where James truly felt at home. He achieved considerable success there, and in 1880, he began involving his eldest son, James Hay Thin, in the business. Over time, he became a full partner in the family enterprise.
However, it wasn’t just James’s eldest son who joined the family business. The enterprise gradually passed from generation to generation, even reaching Thin’s great-grandchildren.
Indeed, his great-granddaughter served as the company’s managing director until 2002.
A New Chapter

It all began in 1841 when the Bristo United Presbyterian Church became a significant part of his life. In that same year, James also had the opportunity to teach evening classes at the church.
Eleven years later, Thin became the head of the women’s class at the Christian Instruction Society. He taught there until 1861, before moving on to teach in the youth classes at the same society.
Other Positions
In addition to his church activities and entrepreneurship, James played an active role in several civic and charitable organisations.
His involvement didn’t stop there. He also served as chairman of the Edinburgh Savings Bank, president of the Society for the Protection of Trade, a director of the Edinburgh City Mission, and a trustee of the Edinburgh Destitute Society.
