The magnificence of this musical tradition has, over time, led to an intriguing development: today, we can confidently speak of the existence of contemporary classical music. And its creators are a new generation of composers. Helen Grime is one of them. Her famous work, Virga, was included by The Royal Scottish National Orchestra in its list of the ten best classical compositions of the 2000s.
An Inherited Talent
When discussing Helen Grime’s background, one must mention her grandparents, who taught music in the town of Macduff. Her mother was also a music educator, based in Edinburgh. Therefore, it is safe to say that Helen was bound to inherit this creative potential.
Regarding the composer’s birth, it is important to note that Grime was born in York. However, her parents decided to return to Scotland when she was an infant.
Education
Helen’s youth was defined by her active pursuit of the oboe. She began studying music at the age of nine, attending The City of Edinburgh Music School. When Grime turned seventeen, she continued her studies at St Mary’s Music School.
Furthermore, it must be said that Helen became quite proficient on the oboe. She even had the opportunity to play the instrument as part of The National Youth Orchestras of Scotland. As for composing, the girl began writing her first pieces at the tender age of twelve.
Career Advancement

Naturally, such an early start to her education, combined with clear musical talent, predetermined the subsequent events in her life. Helen went on to study at The Royal College of Music (RCM). There, she delved into the detailed study of composition while simultaneously playing the oboe in the RCM Sinfonietta and the RCM Baroque Orchestra.
The year 2004 was marked by Helen obtaining a Master’s degree and a distinction diploma. During her studies, she had the fortune of interacting with distinguished teachers who recognised Grime’s potential. It is therefore no surprise that she later held the position of Junior Fellow in Legal and General Composition at the Royal College of Music from 2007 to 2009.
Teaching and Original Works
However, with such an educational foundation and experience, it would have been remiss of Helen not to try her hand at teaching. She was given this chance: in the winter of 2010, she became a composition tutor in the music department at Royal Holloway (Royal Holloway and Bedford New College), part of The University of London.
Yet, Grime never forgot about creating her own music. Among her most celebrated compositions is a concerto for oboe and orchestra. She performed the world premiere of this piece herself as the soloist. The composition was a commission from the Meadows Chamber Orchestra. Commissioned Compositions
Helen Grime’s unique commissioned compositions certainly do not end there. The work A Cold Spring played another key role in her creative output; it was commissioned by the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. Overall, thanks to her creative achievements, Helen has had the honour of collaborating with and fulfilling commissions for a number of prominent ensembles.
For example, in 2010, she composed Everyone Sang on commission for The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). This piece was written to mark the 75th anniversary of The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. In 2011, Grime signed a contract with The Hallé symphony orchestra.
