We’re talking about schools, colleges, universities, and academies. They are, after all, the primary vessels for enlightenment, making their role in a civilised society absolutely crucial.

As for Edinburgh, the city boasts a considerable number of such establishments. What’s particularly striking is that most of them have ancient origins, with some even bearing witness to pivotal historical events.

Leith Academy is one such school. Over its long existence, it has become a prestigious educational institution with its own traditions, unique features, and teaching approach.

A School with a Rich Past

As mentioned, Leith Academy ranks among Scotland’s oldest schools. It was founded around 1560, although some records refer to a ‘Grammar School’ dating back to 1521. Later, the name Leith Grammar was officially adopted by the institution.

Early in its existence, the institution came under the control of the church, a situation that continued for a considerable time, right up until 1806.

Forced Moves

Interestingly, the school didn’t have a dedicated building for classes from the outset. Consequently, pupils had to gather in various locations to facilitate their learning.

From 1636, lessons began to be held in Trinity House. Then, in 1710, due to certain rental disagreements, the school moved to King James Hospital.

It wasn’t until 1792, with the church’s consent, that classes finally began to be held in a specially constructed building on the west side of Leith Links. Robert Burn was the architect, and construction was fully completed in 1806.

Renaming and Another Change of Location

The year 1888 saw the school receive its new name: Leith Academy.

Then, in 1896, the school building on the west side of Leith Links was demolished. New educational premises, designed to accommodate a larger number of students, began to be built on the same site, with construction finishing in 1898. George Craig was responsible for the design.

Expansion and the Construction of the Modern Leith Academy Building

However, an ever-increasing number of potential pupils led to further changes.

The building erected in 1898 was transformed into Leith Primary School, and Leith Academy relocated to a different site on Duke Street. Of course, a dedicated structure had been built there in 1931 beforehand.

But interestingly, even this move wasn’t the final one for the institution. In 1991, a new Leith Academy building was opened near Easter Road.

Approaches to Learning and Unearthing Each Student’s Unique Talents

When discussing Leith Academy, it’s only right to mention its core mission, as this truly defines the institution’s status and calibre – its educational function.

In this regard, the school consistently meets high standards, implementing and utilising the best tools and programmes during its teaching.

It’s also worth noting that beyond academic achievements, Leith Academy places immense emphasis on extracurricular activities.
